Belief in yourself can come pretty easily when you are in moments of success. What happens in the in between though? What happens when you\’re in moments of failure, fall backs, challenges, scenarios that need to be reworked… Where do you draw confidence from then? Where does the belief in yourself stem from in those moments?
I\’m grateful that, while I\’m human and I do have those moments of doubt, I have a great belief in myself to succeed at whatever I put my mind to. I got that from my parents. They always believed in me, and they passed that belief on to me. That was one of the greatest gifts they probably gave to me, although there were many. They are pretty great parents!
If you do not carry that with you from childhood, or if you are not carrying that with you now for whatever reason, does that mean it\’s something that you cannot attain? Absolutely not! Let me start by screaming this…I believe in you! Fiercely! And, I can help you get to a place where you believe in yourself. The work takes time. It is, in and of itself, very challenging at moments. But it is possible. And if it is what you want for yourself, it is yours.
How do I know that it can be something that is built up inside of you and carried with you even outside of sessions where I am walking side by side with you? Let me take you on a little journey.
At 18 years old, I joined the Army and set off for basic training. I didn’t have a single solitary familiar face around me, cheering me on. The only faces surrounding me were either yelling at me, or were just as unsure as I was. I certainly wasn’t athletic in any sense of the word. Seriously, not a single solitary sports related activity throughout all of high school. With no muscle on my little 5 feet tall 105 pound body, no natural athleticism, and nothing grand in nature to make me believe I could rise to the challenge, I had no hard evidence that military life was for me. I had no proof that I could succeed and graduate basic training.
In fact, I very literally had people, who I thought were close to me, bet against me. Money, in one case (you’ll get to hear that story in a later blog post). A couple of friends said, “Oh, if Heather can do it, we can do it.” Spoiler alert, they didn’t. That doesn’t come from a place of snark. I cheer for even those who don’t cheer for me. I simply believe they underestimated me. Anyway, in case you are thinking that just drove me to try harder, it didn’t. I wasn’t aware that people were banking against me until after the fact.
But, friends, even with all of this, failure was never an option. Sure on difficult runs, obstacle courses and long long long days, the thought, that I couldn’t make it, crossed my mind. Thoughts of giving up didn’t evade me, but ultimately I never landed on failure.
Ultimately, I not only graduated basic training, but I was chosen for a student leadership position which I held for the duration. I was not the tallest, or shortest (if you can believe that). I wasn’t the smartest, most athletic, or the best marksman. To be honest I\’m not 100% sure what it is that the drill surgeon saw in me that made me stand out, but there was something. I don’t tell you this to toot my own horn. Truth be told, though, I am proud of myself for it and I strongly believe in celebrating your wins. But, I tell you this because if I, scared shitless, can stand up and stand out, you 100% can too.
The only thing I had on my side was a strong belief in myself. My mindset is my magic.
