What happens in a life coaching session?

Maybe it would help first to define life coaching a little bit. Very basically, coaching is helping people to get unstuck and overcome hurdles, so you can move forward with your dreams and goals.

In a session it starts with establishing a rapport with one another. Between coach and client, a relationship including transparency, honesty and an openness to vulnerability is formed. To be clear that is both a starting point and a relationship that continues to grow throughout the coaching time together.

We set a focus based on the client’s goals. Discussing where the hurdles and road blocks are allows us to uncover what stories and fears lie behind the blocks and discover ways to overcome them. We work on shifting old habits that no longer serve the client and replace them with new, co-created habits that will get them moving forward again.

As the coach I form an understanding of the client’s personality and processes and with those things in mind am able to tailor the sessions based on the clients specific needs and goals.

During the calls we also dive into exercises. These exercises allow the client to use imagination, step outside the box, and hone in on what is happening in their thoughts, emotions, and body. It goes deeper than discussion level and really engages the client in an opportunity for in depth inquiry around what more lies beneath or even what unrealized possibilities are waiting to be discovered. To give you a better understanding there is no specific list of exercises that we will check off as we go. The exercises will come about organically based on what seems most helpful to the client in that moment. There are some exercises that I do use regularly and find particularly valuable and there are other exercises that will be entirely off the cuff.

We create tools that the client can take with them to use in between sessions and they’ll have practices to help keep the momentum as well. The practices are specific and detailed, so when the client leaves the session they are prepared to take the wheel.

Accountability! Yes, I am here to keep you accountable for the practices we create and that you commit to. As your coach I cannot force you to do anything. It has to start with you. But I keep you on track with accountability checkins around how you are doing with your tools and practices and if you slip, we have an opportunity to explore what happened.

P.S. If that’s not enough, you get your own personal cheerleader. I celebrate your wins, point out your strengths, and empower you all the way through!
