Set Short and Long Term Goals with Intention

Most of us want to be healthy, to have fabulous relationships with our friends and family, and to have enough money to do whatever we desire. But I believe that it takes a sharply-focused plan for achieving specific objectives in order to reach these goals. Doing some of the things, some of the time is not where you find the magic.

Setting both long-term and short-term goals allows us to create an effective roadmap to arrive at our desired destination. It’s not enough just to have good intentions. We have to determine SPECIFICALLY what we want that will create a successful, fulfilled life.

Here’s an example of what this looks like:

Goal: I want to lose weight

Short term goal: Lose 5 lbs in the next month

Long term goal: Lose 20 lbs over the next 4 months

Long term goal #2: Maintain the 20 lb weight loss

The why

Start with exploring the why. Why do you want these things? If you took my 5 day challenge you dug into your why. You can work off of that here but may need to add to it for other goals.

Ex: I want to lose weight?

Why?

Because I want to be healthy.

Why?

Because I want to be able to run and play with my kids.

Why?

etc.

Now, the how.

What things do you need to do daily, weekly, and monthly to get started and continue gaining traction on your goals?

How?

I will work out and eat healthier.

OK, now get more specific.

I will work out for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days per week. I will track the calories I consume with each meal and be mindful of the food items I put into my body. I will allow myself 1 dessert or alcoholic beverage each week, but will otherwise fill my body with nutrient dense food. I’ll meal plan each Sunday and fill the house with foods that support my goal.

Dig in deep with each of your goals. Even my example above is just a jumping off point. I’d suggest going even deeper with each step.
