Letting Go of “Shoulds”: Writing Your Own Story

Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like.

As a military wife and also a woman who has always had a plan of some sort for herself, I had to get good with this statement very quickly. The military often sends curveballs, and it is rare that your plans moving forward line up with their plans for your service member and ultimately your family. And honestly that’s a tough hand to be dealt. Every time you think that you have a plan of your own, and some outside entity, such as the military, tells you that’s not going to work out, that they’ve got another plan, you’ve got two choices. You can get angry and resist your way through it, or you can make the best of it. While it may not seem like much of a choice, there most definitely is a choice, and it is yours!

The truth is that I still carry a ton of stories around what life is supposed to look like and how things are supposed to be. Really, we all do.

All of those “should’s”…stories.

All of those “this is the way things are”…stories.

The, “it has to be done a certain way”…stories

It’s not a bad thing that we carry stories. As a matter of fact it’s normal.

The beauty in it is when you recognize a story for what it is and with that you recognize that you can change it if you so choose. Your story is yours to write and what it comes down to is a mindset shift and a creation of new habits that align with your new story.

Read that again.

Yes, you get to write your own story!

Now, I’m not going to blow smoke up your tailpipe. Shifting your mindset is not easy. Changing your habits is not easy. Shifting your mindset and changing your habits to create a story you are happy with, though, is priceless.

If you are truly sick of some of those stories you’ve been carrying, and you are willing to put forth the effort, then you, my dear, are in a place to make a shift. Don’t worry if you don’t know where to or even how to start. That’s what life coaches are for. I’d encourage you to do your research and find a coach who’s values align with your own.
